Gender Differences in Respiratory Care

The purpose of this program is to review the current understanding of the biological, behavioral, and clinical implications of female sex/gender on lung and sleep health disease, and to propose clinical approaches for achieving better health outcomes through more precise management of female patients with lung disease. The activity will inform physicians and advanced practitioners about the importance of considering sex and gender when evaluating patients with pulmonary disease, with sex being a biological construct and gender encompassing not just biology but also social and environmental factors that may influence disease presentation, diagnosis, progression and treatment.

Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of everyone in the healthcare facilities specifically: pulmonologists, critical care specialists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists, internal medicine and primary care physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives
After completion of this activity participants will be able to: 

  1. Analyze pulmonary disease burden among women.
  2. Describe how gender may influence pulmonary disease presentation and progression.
  3. Recognize clinical implications of gender differences in pulmonary disease.
  4. Explain differences in risk for pulmonary vascular disease between men and women.
  5. Describe sex-based differences in treatment responses in pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  6. Discuss resiliency to disease progression in women with established pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Attendees are expected to review all academic materials before attempting to apply for credit. Successful completion of this activity will lead to the issuance of a certificate for 1.5 contact hour of CRCE approved continuing education.

To receive credit, please follow these steps:

  • Review all of the academic materials provided. 
  • Click on the CRCE link to apply for credit. 
  • Complete the online test and/or evaluation. Participants must receive a test score of at least 70% and answer all evaluation questions to receive a certificate. 
  • Qualified applicants will be provided with an online (printable) CRCE certificate based on their attendance and satisfactory completion of this academic acitivity.
