Module 1: Basic Science of Airflow Limitation, how EFL is detected and why it is important for respiratory patients

1 h and 3 min.

Start date: 10.02.2023 End date: 10.02.2023

Professor Peter Calverley (Liverpool, UK) and Professor Claudio Rabec (France) will explore some of the theoretical factors relevant to developing an understanding of flow limitation, why it matters, and how it can be measured in ways that will help translate into improved clinical care. Importantly, this module will also give insights into how we can improve the way in which ventilation can be delivered to patients with COPD.

Much of this module is based on classical physiology which has now been updated in the light of modern investigative techniques, i.e. old ideas studied with new tools. The insights this has given us seems, at least to the speakers, to be important and widely applicable. However, many people will not be familiar with these ideas and so our speakers have taken some time to go into them in this module. This does make it a little more complex and theoretical than the other modules in this program, but it will be rewarding for those who persevere.
